I thought it fit to steer betwixt the two extremes of paraphrase and literal translation; to keep as near my author as I could, without losing all his graces, the most eminent of which are in the beauty of his words.
– John Dryden (1697)
About us
Specializing in the humanities and arts, Wordsmith Translations offers quality translations between German and English with an emphasis on idiomatic language, appropriate terminology, and cultural context. Our rates are tailored to be affordable for artists and academics, educational and cultural institutions, and other non-profit organizations. Students receive additional discounts.
Just as texts differ in their style, content, and purpose, they also require different translation strategies, depending on what they need to convey and who they address. Should the translated text focus on promoting an event or on presenting a convincing argument? Does it serve to demonstrate the author's expertise in a specific field or to showcase their idiosyncratic style? A scholarly article requires a different approach than an art institution's website, an interview is different from a letter, and so on. We draw on over 10 years of experience in a variety of areas as well as extensive familiarity with the English- and German-speaking worlds, allowing us to balance the various – often conflicting – demands of translation.
While our main focus is on translation, we also offer proofreading and editing services in both English and German.
